Flag Checker Blues
by Nowick Gray
Why is there a Ukrainian flag flying over my beach?
Those folks used to fly a Canadian flag there.
Why is it considered bad taste, selfish and privileged, to call it “my beach”? Local identity, pride of one’s place, used to be considered a virtue.
Why are the Canadian and American flags now considered symbols of “white nationalism?” It used to be considered politically correct to be patriotic and fly flags for one’s country.
Why am I averse to asking those neighbors why they’re flying a Ukrainian flag over our beach? It used to be a hallmark of liberal democracies to discuss “controversial” topics in good faith.
Why do I assume that the flaggers’ answer would be some line they picked up from TV? I remember a time when the press challenged government policy and covered both sides of a story.
Why do the residents of that beach deem it virtuous to fly any flags at all? In historic times flags signified ownership of the land, proxies of allegiance to one’s lord.
Who are the rulers of this land? What is their allegiance, and under whose flag do we stand?
Once we held alliances in family, clan and tribe. Now all scattered, divided, homogenized, remixed and rewired, rebooted and engineered to comply with the latest upgrade’s color brand.
Fact Check Factory
They make the fact-checkers, they make the facts.
They own the factory, and we just work here.
We must repeat, after them, the factory facts, and no other.
If not, we’re untruthed. Decertified, remedicated.
Their facts make the world, and all else is fiction, banned.
The checkers are the front-line staff, who keep the workers in line.
The checkers issue reports on all communications.
New facts are minted and circulated as needed.
Inflation of facts is charged as debt of social service, as required.
Production of facts is protected under national security.
National security is superseded by global intelligence.
No other facts may come before theirs, on pain of mortal punishment.
The narrative war is the only war, all else just plot and characters.
The official story is the only story.
The official story maker is shielded from liability.
The factory manual is the only law. The manual is the narrative.
All doctors of medicine and law must be factory certified.
All citizens not employed by the factory lose data points as required.
All humans not certified as citizens are deemed nonhuman, and dangerous.
Nonhumans and other sentient species are deemed nonsentient.
No other future is allowed but the one outlined and elaborated in the factory manual.
Ignorance of updates to the factory manual is no excuse.
Questions of fact are not tolerated, as the facts are already settled, by definition.
As whistleblowers are dispatched without mercy, you did not hear this from me.
